ABOUT (long)
Esa Pietilä’s artistic work is rooted in a deep exploration of sound, form, and the expressive possibilities of the saxophone. Moving fluently between contemporary classical music and jazz, his practice resists clear categorisation, instead focusing on the development of a personal and evolving musical language.
In his compositions, Pietilä often combines carefully structured material with elements of improvisation, creating music that is both precise and open. His works for solo saxophone form a significant part of his output, where extended techniques and nuanced control of timbre play a central role. Through his many compositions and collaborations, he is dedicated to expanding the concerto repertoire of the saxophone. Examples of this are his concerto Graffiti Play for tenor saxophone, improvising jazz trio and orchestra and Kairos Ludus – Double concerto for violin, tenor saxophone and orchestra. At the same time, his chamber works, including pieces for saxophone and string quartet, reflect an expanding interest in texture, interaction, and large-scale form. At the moment, Pietilä is writing a double concerto for two saxophone soloists and orchestra (premiere TBA) plus his second violin concerto which will have its premiere in Sept. 2026.
As a performer, Pietilä is recognised for his intense and highly individual sound. His solo performances and collaborations demonstrate a continuous search for new sonic territories, where the boundaries between composition and improvisation become increasingly fluid. He has also honed his craft as an instrumental soloist in the contemporary classical world, bringing his extraordinary technique and passionate delivery to a wide range of top orchestras
Alongside his work as a performer, Pietilä’s compositions have been performed by various ensembles and have gained attention for their distinctive voice and structural clarity. His music invites listeners into a space where sound itself becomes the primary narrative force.
By constantly interrogating the relationship between composition and improvisation – and discovering imaginative new ways of combining styles and instrumentation – he transcends genre, creating a vital music that recognises no limits. He is an essential artist, creating essential art.

SUOMEKSI (lyhyt versio)
Bachin musiikkia ajattomasti.
